If your worktop is chipped, stained, or just the wrong colour for the units you're planning, quartz is usually the first surface Wakefield homeowners ask us about - it copes with daily use without the periodic sealing that natural stone needs. We template, cut and fit every quartz worktop ourselves rather than handing the job to a separate fabricator, the same in-house approach we use on our bespoke kitchen projects: one team responsible from the first measurement to the final seal.
If your units are structurally sound but tired-looking, a new worktop on its own won't fix that - our kitchen spraying and respraying page covers the alternative route, worth a look before you commit to a worktop-only refit.
What's Included in Your Quartz Worktop Job (and What Isn't)
- In-home consultation where we bring physical quartz slab samples to view against your own units and worktop lighting, rather than just a colour swatch card - quartz can look noticeably different under kitchen spotlights than it does in a showroom.
- On-site laser templating once a colour is chosen, taken to the millimetre and cross-checked for out-of-square walls or uneven cabinet runs before any slab is cut.
- Cutting and edge profiling in our own workshop (pencil round, bullnose, ogee and similar options), with resin seaming for any run too long to come from a single slab, matched as closely as possible to the surrounding pattern.
- Sink, hob and tap cutouts cut to the template rather than judged on-site, with caulking finished around the edges once the worktop is fixed down.
- Removal and disposal of your existing worktop and any appliances in the way of fitting, covered by our registered waste carrier licence so you're not left arranging a skip yourself.
- Delivery, dry-fit check, sealing and final fixing to your cabinets - quartz won't need resealing again afterwards the way a natural stone worktop does.
Not Included / Costed Separately
- Structural changes to base units or carcasses needed to accommodate a non-standard worktop depth or island layout - this is priced and agreed separately
- Plumbing reconnection of sinks and taps, or wiring/commissioning of integrated hobs - carried out by our own NVQ/City & Guilds plumbers and Gas Safe registered engineers as a separate quoted stage
- Bespoke extras like waterfall edges, upstands, drainage grooves or complex multi-piece seaming, which add to the fabrication cost confirmed at your quote
- Jobs needing an imported or non-stock slab, or an unusually large template, which can push installation beyond the usual 7-10 working day turnaround - timescales are confirmed once your order is placed
From First Call to a Fitted Quartz Worktop
- Free home consultation -- We come to your kitchen, bring quartz samples to view against your actual units and lighting, talk through edge profiles and cutouts, and leave you with a written quote - no charge and no obligation to book.
- Laser templating -- Once you've confirmed the colour and booked in, we return to laser-template the worktop to the millimetre, checking walls and cabinet runs for anything out of square before the slab is ordered.
- Cutting and fabrication -- The slab is cut, edge-profiled and any cutouts marked up in our own workshop - nothing goes out to a separate fabricator, so if a detail needs checking against your template, it's the same team handling both.
- Old worktop removal -- On fitting day we take out your existing worktop and any appliances in the way, and dispose of them under our registered waste carrier licence before the new quartz goes anywhere near the cabinets.
- Fitting, sealing and sign-off -- The worktop is dry-fitted first to check joins and cutouts sit correctly, then sealed and fixed down permanently. Any plumbing or hob reconnection that's part of the job follows afterwards, carried out by our own qualified plumbers or Gas Safe engineers.
What Actually Moves the Price of a Quartz Worktop
Quartz is priced by the job rather than a flat rate per metre, because several things change the fabrication cost: how many slabs a run needs (and how much seaming that means), how many cutouts you need for sinks, hobs and taps, which edge profile you pick, and whether the colour is a stock range or something less common that has to be sourced in. A short, single-slab run with a stock colour and one sink cutout costs a good deal less to fabricate than a long island run in a heavily veined colour with multiple seams and a waterfall edge. We give a rough steer over the phone, but the figure that matters is the fixed written quote you get after a home consultation, once we've seen the actual layout and measurements - nothing is added on afterwards that wasn't in that quote.
Quartz Compared to Granite and Laminate Worktops
| Feature | Quartz | Granite | Laminate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maintenance | Wipe clean with warm soapy water, no sealing needed | Needs periodic resealing to stop staining and discolouration | Wipe clean, but moisture can get in at seams and edges over time |
| Surface | Non-porous, resists bacteria, staining and moisture | Porous until sealed, natural stone can mark | Non-porous laminate layer, but can chip or lift at joints |
| Appearance | Engineered for a consistent pattern across the whole run, wide colour range | Natural variation, no two slabs identical | Printed pattern, widest range of budget colours |
| Where it fits | Busy family kitchens wanting durability with minimal upkeep | Kitchens where a natural stone look matters more than low maintenance | Budget-conscious kitchens, rental properties or short-term refits |
Why Quartz Seams Show Every Mistake That Granite Hides
Quartz is manufactured to a repeating pattern, and that consistency is exactly what makes a seam harder to disguise than it is on granite. Granite's natural veining varies from slab to slab, so a join that's slightly off gets lost in the randomness; quartz's evenness means the same fraction of a millimetre shows up as a visible line running across your worktop. That's why templating accuracy matters more with this material than most people expect before they've had it fitted, and it's why we don't let a template pass from one company to another before the slab gets cut. Our own team takes the measurements, our own workshop cuts and edges the slab, and if a seam position needs adjusting to sit better against the pattern, the person who can make that call is standing in your kitchen rather than at the end of a phone to a supplier we've never met. We've built that habit of keeping control of the detail into kitchen projects across Wakefield and West Yorkshire for 20 years, our joiners are City & Guilds qualified, and every quartz installation carries labour cover for 5 years and product cover for 2 - not as a selling point, but because it means a fault gets fixed by the people who fitted it, not argued over between a fabricator and a fitter who've never spoken to each other.
Where We Fit Quartz Worktops
We're based on Woodville Way in Knottingley, and Wakefield is where most of our quartz worktop jobs happen, alongside the towns around it - Castleford, Pontefract, Featherstone, Normanton, Ossett, Crofton, Walton, Outwood, Stanley, Hemsworth, South Kirkby and Altofts. Older terraced streets in Wakefield and Castleford often mean narrow hallways and doorways, so we check access and confirm slab size at the templating stage rather than turning up on fitting day and finding a full-length run won't get round a corner. In villages further out towards Hemsworth and South Kirkby, where properties tend to sit back from the road, we build extra carrying time into the fitting slot rather than quoting the same access time as a terraced Wakefield kitchen. If you're outside this list, get in touch anyway - it's worth a quick call to check rather than assuming we don't cover it.
Quartz Worktop Questions We Get Asked in Wakefield
How long does a quartz worktop job take once it's booked in?
Most jobs run 7-10 working days from templating to fitting, though that depends on the colour - stock ranges move faster than an imported or less common slab, and an unusually large template can push the timescale out. We confirm the actual date once your order is placed and the slab is on its way, rather than quoting a fixed date at the consultation stage.
Will you cut around my existing sink and hob?
Yes - the sink, hob and tap cutouts are cut from the template rather than judged on the day. Reconnecting the plumbing or wiring the hob back in is a separate stage carried out by our own NVQ Level 2/City & Guilds-qualified plumbers or Gas Safe registered engineers, and it's quoted alongside the worktop rather than bundled invisibly into the price.
What happens to my old worktop?
We remove it and take it away for disposal as part of the job, along with any appliances that need moving out of the way first. We hold a registered waste carrier licence, so it's disposed of properly rather than left for you to sort out.
Can I get a waterfall edge or a matching upstand?
Both are options, but they're bespoke extras rather than part of the standard installation - they add cutting and fitting time, so they're priced once the design is settled and confirmed at your quote rather than included as standard.
Is quartz cheaper than granite?
It varies more by the specific slab and pattern than by the material itself - some quartz ranges cost less than granite, some cost more. What quartz generally saves you is ongoing maintenance, since it doesn't need resealing the way granite does. We can only give an accurate comparison once you've narrowed down which colours you're choosing between.
Do you need to visit before giving a quote?
For an accurate figure, yes. We'll give a rough steer over the phone, but the written quote comes after a home consultation, because worktop length, cutout count, seam positions and access all affect the price and none of those can be judged properly from a phone call.
What's covered by the guarantee?
Installation and labour are guaranteed for 5 years, and the worktop itself for 2 years. That covers faults in fitting or in the product - it doesn't cover accidental damage after handover, such as a dropped pan cracking an edge, which is standard for any worktop material.
Do I need to clear my kitchen before you come to template or fit?
Clearing worktops and anything stored directly underneath the area we're working on helps, but you don't need to empty the whole kitchen - we'll talk you through what to move out of the way when we book your templating and fitting dates.
